A Weekend in Rigi

The Great Escape

A Weekend in Rigi

Do you want to get away? I have just the right place. It’s Mount Rigi, located on the Alps in Central Switzerland. Rigi is known as the Queen of the mountains. I can see why she’s magnificent. The views from the mountain are one of the most beautiful I’ve seen. If you’re looking for peace and serenity, there’s no better place than this.

Stay

Hotel Rigi Kaltbad

We really enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Rigi Kaltbad. The staff was helpful and very friendly. The best part was the spa, it’s like stepping into nirvana. The mineral bath was just what we needed after a long day of travel. And the outdoor pool had breathtaking views overlooking the mountains. I’ve never felt more relaxed. While in Rigi we just walked around and explored. After hopping from country to country we just wanted to unwind.

Quick disclaimer: Traveling by train in Switzerland can be very expensive, we opted to buy a three Swiss Travel Pass for our journey.

Lucerne, Switzerland

If you’re staying in Rigi for a few days, I highly suggest taking a day trip to Lucerne. It’s a beautiful city; if you’re a fan of medieval architecture like me you will absolutely love it. You can take the cogweel (train) to Vitznau and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Swiss alps, you’ll spot a few happy cows along the way. From Vitznau take a boat to Lucerne which will take approximately 1 hour, and enjoy the magnificent beauty of Lake Lucerne.

While in Lucerne, we visited their most popular sites. First, the Kapellbrücke (Chapel Bridge), a historical landmark that’s been preserved for hundreds of years. The details of the bridge are fascinating. Although it’s busy with tourists, it’s definitely worth a visit.  Another famous site is the Dying Lion of Lucerne Monument. The lion is carved from a wall of sandstone rock and commemorates the Swiss Guards who lost their lives during the French Revolution. It’s truly impressive and moving.

Lucerne, Switzerland

My favorite part was strolling through the charming Old Town. It’s full of fresco painted buildings each with a different design. I wanted to take a photo of every single one. There’s also plenty of boutiques and souvenir shops to choose from; I spotted a really cool record store there.

And if you get hungry, there are many restaurants and cafes in the area. I recommend getting a baguette hotdog from Twiny Station; they’re the best ever!
