Lunch in Havana

Mojitos y Mariquitas

Happy Sunday everybody! Today is the first of several blog posts dedicated to Havana, Cuba. I’m starting with my favorite thing in the world, food of course. Here are some recommendations on where to get a fantastic meal and a mojito or two in Havana!

O’Reilly 304

We were looking for a quick bite in Habana Vieja (the old Havana area) and found O’Reilly 304You’re thinking an Irish Pub in Havana, right? The street is named after an Irishman, but the restaurant itself looks more like a taqueria than a pub. And yes, they got some tasty tacos. This place has stellar reviews online so we had a feeling the food would be good, and boy was it!

That’s me! And my photobombing hubby.

304 is a small restaurant, and seating can be a bit cramped. Don’t let that put you off, the food and drinks are well worth it. We got pretty lucky; it wasn’t overly packed when we went. I loved the decor, a little hipster and arty and pure fun. After several hours of walking around in the heat, the laid-back atmosphere was exactly what we needed along with a few cool drinks.

Show me the way to the next gin bar

If cocktails are what you’re looking for, then this is the place. O’Reilly 304 is gin bar, and they’re known for their famous gin and tonic. The Mo Gin (half Gin and tonic/half mojito) is very popular.

As for the food, if I were to describe it in three words, it is simple, flavorful, and fresh. They have a wide menu, and the portions are generous. The lobster and octopus were scrumptious. The preparation is not fancy or over the top; it’s all served with some nice root veggies and mariquitas (plantain chips.) Not a meat eater? No worries, this place is vegetarian-friendly, and the veggies are delicious.

For dessert, we had a yummy lemon pie I wanted seconds of. We loved 304; the staff is friendly, and the prices are reasonable. If you find yourself in Old Havana check it out.

La Cocina de Lilliam

La Cocina de Lilliam is a little hidden gem in Havana. Props to my nephew Leo for finding this place. Lilliam is one the most well-known paladares (family-owned restaurants) in Havana. If you want peace and quiet with a touch of zen, eat here.

Lilliam’s dollhouse

This restaurant is so picturesque it looks like a dollhouse. I loved the cozy atmosphere; the best part was the garden complete with a Koi pond. The staff was warm and welcoming and knowledgeable about food. They have quite a large menu so you’re sure to find something you like. The food was absolutely delicious!

The appetizers were the standouts. The malanga fritters were excellent. We also ordered the assorted bread basket that was out of this world; I’m still dreaming about that bread! We had the fried chicken breast, beef stew, and the snapper. Bring your appetite because the portions are huge. I recommend the snapper, just don’t drink from the glass because there’s a tiny fish swimming inside. No joke.

As for dessert, you can try the blue cheese ice cream if you’re feeling adventurous. We decided to pass and went for the chocolate mousse, so good. I can’t wait to go back to Lilliam’s kitchen!

I hope you enjoyed this post. If you’re planning a trip to Havana and would like some tips, please let me know. Stay tuned; I may have a part two in the works!

Buen provecho!
