Travel Diary | Marrakesh, Morocco

Marrakesh is one of the most exciting places I’ve ever been to. It’s so colorful and full of life, I can see why Yves Saint Laurent sought inspiration there. Being there feels like you’re on a magic carpet ride.

If you’re planning a trip to Marrakesh, I have a few recommendations to help make the most of your time there. I’m sure it will be unforgettable!

Stay

 Riad Karmela Princesse, Marrakesh

Riad Karmela Princesse

We chose the Riad Karmela Princesse for our three days in Marrakesh. It’s located in heart of the Médina, and in walking distance to Jemaa el-Fnaa and the Marrakesh Museum. The hotel staff was warm and welcoming. They offered us baklava and Turkish Tea when we arrived. Our host Houda gave us some helpful tips on how to get around the city safely and efficiently.

My husband and I enjoyed a hammam in the spa which was wonderful. My masseuse Nouhaila gave me the most relaxing massage I’ve ever had; she’s the best! Even if you stay at another riad, I recommend making dinner reservations at the restaurant. They have a fantastic chef; the meals were delicious.

Cuisine De Terroir, Marrakesh

Cuisine De Terroir

We had a yummy lunch in Cuisine De Terroir. It’s a small, charming place that offers typical Moroccan cuisine. They also have burgers and sandwiches on the menu; we went for the Crêpe which were delicious. The staff was lovely and attentive. It’s an excellent spot to refuel or if you want a break from the crowds at the market square.

Chez Brahim

Chez Brahim

Another great food spot not far from the Jemaa el-Fnaa is Chez Brahim. If you want traditional Moroccan food, this is the place for you. The prices are affordable, and the service is friendly. Some menu items are the pigeon pastilla, chicken tagine, and eggplant salad. We ordered the chicken and lamb skewers; which were very tasty.

Go
Yves Saint Laurent Museum

Yves Saint Laurent Museum

The Yves Saint Laurent Museum is a must. If you’re into fashion and all things Saint Laurent you will love this place. Unfortunately, photos aren’t allowed inside, but I have to say to be in the presence of those breathtaking designs from the 1960’s and on, was not lost on me. It was a remarkable experience; he was truly a genius.

Jardin Majorelle

Jardin Majorelle is an enchanted garden in the middle of the city. It’s full of exotic plants and trees, lotus flowers, streams, and water lilies. It’s so scenic and peaceful. I recommend getting there early to avoid the large lines. Inside the garden is the Berber Museum, a hidden gem with the most incredible jewelry collection.

Bahia Palace

For you history buffs, the Bahia Palace is a must see. It was built in the late 19th century, and the architecture is truly impressive. It’s a feast for the eyes, the beautiful handmade mosaic tiles, wooden ceilings, and intricate carvings are just breathtaking.

La Maison de la photographie

House of Photography in Marrakech

I highly recommend visiting the Photography Museum of Marrakesh. If you’re a photography lover like me (it was my major in college), you will definitely appreciate it. It houses a collection of 8000 photographs from 1870 to 1950 representing the historical aspects of Morocco and Berber culture. You can also enjoy mint tea in their lovely rooftop cafe.

Experience

You must experience the markets. Jemaa el-Fnaa in the Medina is the largest market in Marrakesh. It’s full of locals and tourists. They sell an array of items from clothes, carpets to snails. There are lots of food stands with kebabs and pastries. It can be crowded, and there’s some harassment, but the fresh OJ was well worth it.

Be sure to stop by The Mellah. There you can buy tea, perfume, oils, herbs, and spices like saffron and curry for just a few Dirhams. I also managed to find makeup at the spice market! Of course, the makeup addict in me went wild.

The rocks look like precious stone, but it’s actually eyeliner. You crush a tiny piece with water to form a wet black pigment. It comes with a handmade wooden tool for application. The round terracotta stones are lipstick; you wet your finger with water touch the rock and place the color on your lips, and you’re left with a red crimson shade. Let’s just say I had a great time at the spice market.
